What happens to a country and its citizens after it has been dissolved? The process of German-German reunification was unique in world history. It had and continues to have major global political, military and economic consequences. This film starts where the wall ends. From reunification, the reconfiguration of an entire country through to the establishment of a new judiciary and administrations, the film documents the laboured first steps of a newly reunited nation. The process of dismantling the wall in the heads of the people, however, seems to be a much slower process. The reconstruction of the East is anything but slow; the billions invested do appear to be counteracting the mass unemployment and rejuvenating a barely competitive economy. A balanced dramaturgical portrayal of the experiences of people from all walks of life, intertwined with exclusive archive material and the high-quality on-screen retelling of individual histories makes the film a witness to how a network of 17 million people continued to move on with their lives while their world changed drastically around them.
