WHERE IS THE WALL?

Autumn 2009 will see the 20th anniversary of a very historical day: the fall of the Berlin Wall. In many people’s minds, the wall still has a presence, yet for the younger generation it is just history and largely untraceable. What has happened to the Berlin Wall? Did it just disappear into thin air? Where are the remains? And what are the stories of the people who have hoarded fragments of the wall or built businesses from them? The official dismantlement began on 12 November 1989 and was already largely completed by the end of 1990. The wall, which should have stood for another 100 years, became mobile overnight. Since then, remains of the anti-Imperialist protective barrier remain only at a handful of places in reunited Berlin. The main protagonist of this film is thus an object, which no longer exists but is still present and not only in the everyday life of Berlin. Far beyond the city limits and even national borders the wall continues to exist in perception and memory. The film looks – and not always in a politically correct manner – at the behaviour surrounding one of the most tangible remnants of the totalitarian system of the GDR. It shows the mystery and whimsy surrounding the use of the wall’s remains, documents the voids the wall has left at many places in the city’s skyline and tells of the people who have devoted themselves to the Berlin Wall.
