The Hidden Word
A mind is a terrible thing to waste

1951. A gray and grimy industrial town on the Rhine. A family copes. Poor, uneducated, religiously conservative, intolerant, suspicious of education - especially in females. Growing up in such a family is hard for five-year-old Hildegard, who fiercely wants to read and write. Her only ally is her grandfather, who recognizes her gift and encourages her to set her imagination free. As she grows older, she discovers not only the power of language, but also the beauty of words. And though her love of stories and literature only angers her small-minded father, she stubbornly pursues her quest for knowledge - as an adolescent discovering manners and good taste, as a romantic teen falling in love for the first time, as an ambitious young woman rebelling against a harassing superior or against the prejudices of her family. With the help of enlightened teachers - and the force of her own determination - Hildegard ultimately finds a way to make her family proud of her. And she also succeeds in peering behind the facade of language, where she uncovers the richness of the hidden word.
