Serrallonga

Common criminal or champion of the people? Joan Sala i Ferrer, known as Serrallonga, is the most famous bandit in Catalan history and one of the most well-known, albeit enigmatic, figures in Catalonia. He rose to mythical status during his own lifetime, at a time when the Catalan people were enslaved by hunger and feudal structures, and banditry was one of the only escapes from abject poverty. Directed by respected filmmaker Esteve Rovira (El cor de la ciutat), the miniseries presents Serrallonga as a complex man full of moral contradictions. He is shown with his family, his band of outlaws, and with the nobles of the time. He is portrayed in fights, ambushes, attacks, conspiracies and passionate lovemaking. Though rooted in Catalan history, Serrallonga's fate is universal and reflects the ambiguous process of myth-making at the intersection of legend and reality. Produced with a budget of € 4.5 million, the two-parter was filmed on many of the original locations in the Guilleries and Montseny areas, and in Barcelona.
