Tales from the bear alps - In Poland's wild mountains
|
|
The Bieszczady Mountain range is often referred to as Poland's wildest corner. The low mountain range is part of the Eastern Carpathians and boasts a unique, small scaled landscape, situated directly on the borders to the Ukraine and Slovakia. The tallest peak is the Tarnica, at a height of 1,364 metres. In Bieszczady today, there are a mere 25 people per square kilometre. There is no industry to pollute the atmosphere and there are few roads. Large mammals, such as bears, wolves and lynx, as well as many bird species, including black storks and eagle owls feel at home here, as do deer, stags, beavers and otters. The flora is extremely rich in species and the vast beech groves are stunning. |
