From the Harz region to the Atlantic coast - The return of the salmon

Once, salmon were abundant in the major German rivers Rhine, Elbe and Weser, but had become extinct in most of Germany's other rivers by 1949. Far too high weirs and the destruction of semi-natural brooks and streams prevented the leaping, migratory fish from returning to their habitual breeding areas. But many nature-lovers dream of the salmon returning to their native waters and campaign for the regeneration of brooks and streams. Many thousands of salmon have been submitted to streams over the past ten years. The film accompanies the young salmon on their adventurous journey through some of Lower Saxony's most picturesque landscapes. But their journey is dangerous: weirs, turbines, fishing nets and natural enemies, such as otters and cormorants make life difficult for the salmon. The film not only illustrates the fish, but also the wonderful flora and fauna of the region, which can be discovered along the length of the streams. Fish-lovers are eagerly awaiting the first returnees. When will the first salmon manage it?
